Like every other writer, I was told from early on to "write what you know." About a year into my first stab at graduate school I came to the conclusion that I didn't know jack. So I quit. Not writing, graduate school. I waited on tables, tended bar, dug ditches, worked as a carpenter, and finally joined the navy, becoming a helicopter pilot. Since then I've managed to turn some of those experiences into words on the page.
